Skype is a popular tool for video and voice calls over the Internet. In addition, the service allows you to easily send instant messages and share files. For a fee, Skype will also allow you to call landlines or mobile phones from your computer. You might use Skype to virtually meet with a colleague, host a guest speaker, or hold virtual office hours.
Getting Started with Skype
If you've never used Skype before, you will need to create an account and download the software to your computer. If you are using Skype in one of the video-capable Annenberg classrooms, the software should already be installed, but you will need your own account.
For instructions on creating an account and downloading Skype, click here. If you are on a Windows machine or mobile device, be sure to select the correct guide.
Before starting your first Skype call, we recommend making sure that your computer audio and video settings are configured properly. Watch the short video below or click here to learn more about checking these settings.
Making a Video Call
To make a video call, open the Skype software and make sure you are signed in.
Click "Contacts" and search for the person you want to call.
You may see status icons next to your contacts' names, detailing whether they are online, away, etc. For more information about what these status icons mean, click here.
To call a user, hover over the person's picture and click "Video Call" (Mac) or click the blue video icon (PC). To receive a call, click the video icon to accept.
You should now be able to see and hear the other person!

While on a call, you can use the call bar to:
A. Hide or reveal your Contacts/Recent lists B. Turn your video (webcam) on and off. C. Mute and unmute your microphone. D. Send files, share contacts, share your screen, or invite others to join the Skype call. E. Hang up. F. Show the instant message window to chat with the person you are calling.
Troubleshooting
If you are having issues seeing/hearing the other person, you should both check your audio/video preferences:
On a Mac, click Skype from the menu bar at the top of tour screen. Choose "Preferences" and then "Audio/Video". Make sure that the correct microphone, speakers, and camera are selected.
On a PC, click "Tools" from the menu bar. Click "Options" and then check your "Audio, "Sounds", and "Video" settings to be sure the correct devices are selected.
If you continue to have issues with the audio/video, you may want to use Skype's "Connection Troubleshooter" for more info.
