End of Quarter Canvas Checklist

Your course is over, now what? Use this checklist to make sure you have closed your Canvas course correctly.

1 - When the course ends, students will see a read-only version of the course. Take some time to choose which materials you want students to continue to be able to access. (Perhaps you want them to see your readings and lecture notes, but not assignments or quizzes.) For anything you want hidden, change the availability date to match the end date of the course.

2 - When the quarter ends, you have two options to end your Canvas course: "close" or "conclude".

  • If you do nothing, your course is will become "closed" after the end date, which means that it becomes read-only for your students, but is still an active course for you. This allows you to go back and edit the course content at any time, including grades. The downside is that the course will still appear under your active courses in Canvas (learn how to hide courses from the menu).

  • Alternately, you can manually "conclude" your course, making it read-only for both you and your students. This will remove the course from your active course list, and you will not be able to make any changes or adjustments. This means that students will not be able to submit late work and you will not be able to make grade changes within Canvas. Once a course is "concluded", it cannot be undone.

3 - To copy your course content into a new course, please see the "Start of Quarter Canvas Checklist".
